SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) — Union College says a top Tufts University administrator will become its next president.

David R. Harris will become the 19th president of the private Schenectady college in July and the first African-American to lead the school.

The 48-year-old sociologist will succeed Stephen Ainlay, who is stepping down after 12 years.

Harris has been provost and senior vice president at Tufts University since 2012.

He previously worked at Cornell University and served in the Obama administration as deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
