Officers with the Utica Police Department will be hitting the streets with new body cameras on October 1st.

The officers been undergoing training on the new cameras this month.

Chief Mark Williams says the body cameras will replace the previously used dashboard cameras.

Willaims says the dashboard cameras only showed video from vehicle traffic stops.  He says the body cameras are more versatile and will take the officer outside, away from his vehicle.

The department has about 50 body cameras.  They were paid for by a state grant obtained by Senator Joseph Griffo.
