The community is mourning the death of Trooper Donald R. Fredenburg, who died during his second week of basic training at the New York State Police Academy in Albany.

Superintendent Joseph D'Amico announced that Trooper Fredenburg collapsed at approximately 6:30am on Friday, March 14, 2015 while running with members of the 203rd Basic School at the University of Albany campus.  D'Amico says that the class was about a quarter of a mile into their run when Fredenburg fell to the ground.

The 23-year-old's heart was restarted through the use of an AED, but it was not enough. He was brought to Albany Medical Center where he died an hour later.

Fredenburg is from Utica, New York.  He is survived by his wife, Angela; his father, Donald, Sr.; and his mother, Joanne Cowley.

Fredenburg served as a United States Marine from 2009 to 2013 and will be buried will full military honors.
