WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — New York's Westchester County is raising the age to buy tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21.

Democratic County Executive George Latimer signed the legislation on Wednesday. It takes effect in 60 days.

Supporters say that when combined with public health outreach efforts and tobacco taxes, raising the smoking age can prevent many teens from becoming addicted at an early age.

New York has debated raising the statewide age for buying smoking products to 21.

It's currently 18 statewide, except in places where a local law is enacted.

It's now 21 in New York City.
