The holiday getaway is underway with lots of folks heading out for Memorial Day weekend.

Ed Welsh, General Manager of AAA Northeast says they're expecting 43-million Americans to hit the road.

That's the second-highest volume on record since AAA began tracking travel volumes in 2000, trailing only 2005.

“Americans are eagerly anticipating the start of summer, and expensive gas prices won’t keep them home this Memorial Day weekend,” said Welsh. “Consumer spending remains strong, helped by solid job and income growth. Families continue to prioritize spending their disposable incomes on travel, and near-record numbers of them are looking forward to doing just that for Memorial Day.”

Welsh says there's also a bit of good news on gas prices. According to AAA, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas in Central New York is $2.86.

That's the same as it was last week and is 19 cents cheaper than this time a year ago.
