March 16 through May 14, burning of brush is prohibited throughout the state as the danger of wildfire is great.  Undergrowth is dried out from the winter and new growth has yet to emerge to keep fire in check.

Some contained fires are still allowed but open burning of brush and yard debris is prohibited.  It’s also illegal to burn leaves and garbage any time of the year.

New York’s regulations concerning open burning can be found at the Department of Environmental Conservation website.
