An Army paratrooper from Medina, New York was killed in a training exercise on Friday.

Sergeant Shaina B. Schmigel was a military intelligence analyst with the 37th Engineer Batallion.  Although the exact circumstances surrounding her death are still being investigated, authorities say she died during a nighttime training jump with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Schmigel joined the Army in 2010 and joined the Second Brigade Combat Team in 2011, and was subsequently deployed to Iraq.

Schmigel was using a T-11 parachute, which was once discontinued - and then reinstated for use - by the military following an accident in 2011.

Schmigel was 21 years old.
