HERTFORD, N.C. (AP) — Officials say a North Carolina high school staff member was hit by a fire extinguisher while trying to break up a fight that left as many as 12 other staff members also injured.

Perquimans County School Superintendent Matthew Cheeseman tells news outlets that as many as 13 faculty and staff members were hurt as they tried to stop the fight involving five students at Perquimans High School.

Cheeseman says one of the students threw a fire extinguisher that ended up hitting a staff member.

While most of the staff involved sustained bruises, cuts and scrapes, Cheeseman says one faculty member went to an urgent care facility where a doctor diagnosed her with a concussion.

One student was charged. Deputies say they expect the other four students will be charged also.
