Utica, NY (WIBX) - The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers in Central New York about false advertisements. The non-profit group said Heat Surge LLC, is the company behind a new false ad offering free "Miracle Convecta-Red Heaters" to people in Upstate, NY.

The BBB said the company, which is based in Canton, Ohio is attempting to capitalize on warmth by lying about the free heaters. Officials with the agency said those who called were met with sales pitches about add-ons and ended up being charged about $300 to 400 for the so-called free heaters. The consumer protection agency said Heat Surge's use of the word "free" in the ads is a violation of BBB's business practice and code of advertising. "The word 'free' can only be used in advertising when the advertiser is offering an unconditional gift. If there is a cost to receive the free gift, the advertiser must clearly and conspicuously disclose the conditions," said David Polino, BBB President.

Consumers are urged to avoid any dealings with the company.
