The city is preparing to make improvements to a section of State Street near the Governmental Plaza.

Mayor Richard David said the street serves as an important gateway into the city, "especially from Binghamton University."

The planned State Street makeover is to include infrastructure improvements from Hawley to Susquehanna streets.

The project calls for new bike lanes, pedestrian crossings and landscaping. Curb and parking modifications also are planned.

The basic construction work is expected to cost $482,000. New traffic signals at the intersection of State and Hawley streets will cost $340,000.

A video flyover of the project concept shows the area without the existing walkway over State Street between City Hall and the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham said a final decision about removing the pedestrian bridge, which is no longer in use, has not been made. He said there will be an additional cost if the span is taken out as part of the project.

A public informational meeting on the gateway project has been scheduled for February 28. The session in the City Council Chambers is to start at 5:30 p.m.

Representatives from McFarland Johnson, which is designing the project, will be on hand to answer questions.

Groundbreaking is planned for late this summer. Work on the project could be completed by the end of the year.
