Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]The Broome County District Attorney’s office reports there have been 55 overdose deaths in the county so far this year with almost half of those deaths in the City of Binghamton.

13 deaths were reported in the last three months, which is a slight decrease compared to last year.  During the first three quarters of 2016, 60 deaths were linked to overdoses. A total of 78 people died as a result of overdose last year.

The DA’s office says the average age of those who died in the last three months was 41 and 69 percent were males.

The overdose deaths in the last quarter were all attributed to heroin or opioids.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says the numbers confirm that the County needs more treatment services.  Garnar issued a statement thanking New York Senator Fred Akshar and Assembly members Donna Lupardo and Clifford Crouch for clearing the way for a treatment facility to be located at the Broome Developmental Center, which was closed by New York State.

Garnar is also urging the Legislature to approve the state funding for the services.
