While dangerous wind chill temperatures grip the area, the Broome County Office for Aging is offering advice for older adults.

OFA says home temperature should be at a minimum of 68 degrees and doors in rooms not being used should be kept closed.  Residents should dress warmly, including when going to sleep and keep hydrated, avoid spending too much time outside, prepare for power outages and make sure there are adequate supplies of food, water, medications, batteries and flashlights.

Older resident should also make a plan with relatives or friends to check on them during cold weather and don’t hesitate to accept help from others offering to assist in clearing walkways and handrails to avoid falling.

More information on dealing with winter weather can be found at www.gobroomecounty.com/seniors or by calling (607) 778-2411.
