The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association says a preliminary investigation into the assault of a corrections officer at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy shows it appears to have been a "gang hit."

They say the officer was cut over the left eye and pushed head first into a locker by an inmate in what was apparently a premeditated attack.

Union officials say one inmate allegedly ordered a "hit" on the officer and enlisted another inmate to carry out the assault.  The investigation also determined that several other inmates acted as lookouts during the attack.

The alleged weapon was an aluminum can top that had a pen handle and black electrical tape glued to it.

The injured officer, who has two years on the job, was treated at a local hospital.

State Police are investigating the assault.
