Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling on the state legislature to pass his proposal to raise the age of criminal responsibility in New York.

Cuomo wants to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 years of age. He says that would spare minors from adult prisons and jails.

New York is one of only two states in the nation that automatically prosecute 16 and 17-year olds as adults.

Following a tour of the medium-security Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie, Cuomo also announced that the state will hire an additional 103 full-time corrections officers to bolster safety and security throughout the state's prisons.
