ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Following a delay and continued criticism of his administration's handling of emails, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has set a meeting with top state leaders to discuss creating a new email retention policy.

The letter from Cuomo's office was sent Friday, a day after The Associated Press reported that the push to reform the email policy appeared to have sputtered out.

In the letter, Cuomo's chief counsel suggests a May 22 meeting with legislative leaders, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Cuomo initially proposed the meeting in March, saying he was willing to discuss a uniform email retention policy to replace his administration's practice of purging most emails after 90 days.

That policy concerned government watchdogs and some lawmakers who said it weakens government transparency and accountability.
