Rome, NY (WIBX) - A Rome man has been charged with assaulting a correction officer at the Oneida County Correctional Facility.

Oneida County Sheriff's Deputies say, on December 27,  31-year-old Michael Nero punched a male correctional officer--Nero was attempting to avoid returning to his housing area. After the punch was thrown, the officer lost his footing and hit the back of his head on cell block bars. The officer received treatment at a local emergency room and is still out of work due to head injuries. The officer's name is not being released.

Nero was arraigned in Oriskany Village Court and charged today with felony assault. He was sent back to the Oneida County Correctional Facility without bail.

Nero was being held on burglary and sexual misconduct charges.
