Albany, NY (WIBX) - May is Motorcycle Safety Month, and with more than 340,000 registered motorcycles in New York State, the Department of Motor Vehicles is stressing the importance of being safe.

According to the National Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are nearly 40 times more likely to die in traffic crashes than those in cars.

To lower those numbers and to protect all motorists, the DMV is reminding drivers to signal their intentions before switching lanes, never drive while distracted and never tailgate motorcyclists.

Riders are encouraged to avoid being out in poor weather and to always wear a DOT-compliant helmet.
