The Utica Elks Lodge No.33 will hold their annual Flag Day ceremony this evening.

The ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m. and is held at the Purple Heart Memorial Park in Utica - on the corner of Whitesboro and Erie Streets in West Utica. The event is free and includes a reading of the flag's history and evolution.

Celebrations of the American flag date back as far as 1885, according to USFlag.org. The site, however, says it wasn't until 1949 that President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress officially designating June 14th as the National Flag Day.
