Former SUNY Poly President Peter Cayan has died at the age of 85.

Cayan was the president of the college from 1982 to 2002.  He oversaw the construction of a permanent campus at its current Marcy site.

“Peter Cayan was a remarkable leader who guided the college through a critical period in its history,” said Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, President and CEO of SUNY Poly. “We will forever be indebted to Peter for the tremendous impact he had on our institution and on the Mohawk Valley. The SUNY Poly community mourns his passing and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Cayan's legacy at the college was honored with the dedication of the Peter J. Cayan Library in 2003 and the establishment of a scholarship fund in his name.

The Genesis Group has issued the following statement on Cayan's passing:

The Genesis Group would like to offer its deepest sympathies on the passing of former SUNYIT President Peter J. Cayan.

Cayan, who was President of SUNY Institute of Technology from 1982 to 2002, was also a "Founding Member" of The Genesis Group. It was his leadership and vision which allowed us to get our start from right here on the SUNY campus.
