The Herkimer County Correctional Facility was forced to close and inmates had to be moved following a water main break.

According to Herkimer County Legislator Ray Johnson, he received word that the jail had to be closed late Wednesday night.

Johnson told First News with Keeler in the Morning that the jail was shut down and inmates were transferred to other facilities until the repairs to the main could be made. Johnson says the repair will cost approximately $50,000 with the bid and hopefully will be finished by the end of this week (June 15th).

When asked about the future of the new jail project at the P&C site, Johnson believes that the architect will finish his drawings by August and bids will be put out for in September. Johnson confirmed that the jail will go at that site and the project continues to move forward.
