How Much Snow Did You Get from the Storm? (Storm Totals)
The first winter storm of 2019, named Harper, created hazardous driving conditions across the Northeast on Saturday night into Sunday and dumped about a foot of snow on the Mohawk Valley. Snow started falling at about 4 p.m. on Saturday and quickly covered the roads.
Earlier in the day, Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference in Utica to discuss plans in advance of the storm, issuing a ban on tractor trailers and busses on all interstates, including the New York State Thruway. Shortly after 4, State Police were already pulling over tractor trailer drivers on the Thruway who were violating the order.
The Utica Comets game was moved from a 7 p.m. start to 2 p.m.. By the time the game ended, the snow had already started and snow-covered roads were already making traffic difficult. Several events and church services were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday.
Eyewitness News Chief Meteorologist Rachel Witter told WIBX total storm accumulation totals were predicted to reach 12 to 18 inches. By midnight, only about 5 inches of snow had fallen on the region; however, of burst of heavy snow between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. more than doubled the storm total. Forecasters are predicting frigid temperatures on Sunday and Monday with single digit highs and overnight lows dropping well below zero. The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Warning for Sunday night and Monday with winds gusting over 35 mph and wind chill factors feeling as low as 35 below zero. The high temperature for Monday is predicted to only reach 3 degrees and Tuesday's highs should warm up into the upper teens.
