Move over Tom Hanks, there's a new Castaway in town and she's stealing the hearts of animal lovers across New York State.

First responders in upstate New York had to put in some overtime this week in order to rescue a dog that got herself stranded in what is admittedly one of the cutest ways possible.

New York Dog Rescue Has Movie Similarities

Hollywood has already made Air Bud and Air Bud: Golden Receiver... what's one more dog-themed movie? While it's easy to joke about the Castaway similarities, the film actually has some deep ties to New York's Mid-Hudson Valley.

Golden Retriever Rescued from Island in Binghamton, NY

This week, firefighters in Binghamton, NY responded to a call regarding an over-eager golden retriever named Winnie that got herself stranded on an island on the Susquehanna River (below).

As the department shared, a lighthearted day of chasing geese led Winnie to get slightly carried away... and marooned on an island. In what might be more Gilligan's Island than Castaway, Winnie's "3-hour tour" turned into roughly 24 hours.

After initial efforts to catch the carousing canine failed, firefighters teamed up with their local animal control agency to set up a trap on the island. Luckily, the next morning saw first responders returning on their dinghy, Winnie in tow.
