Once the weather clears, the region is to be in for a spectacular celestial show.

The Kopernik Observatory and Science Center in Vestal will be opening starting at 9 p.m. on clear nights through the 14th for the viewing of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

For updates go to www.kopernik.org or call (607) 748-3685 after 5 p.m. to confirm there will be a viewing that night.

Kopernik Public Programs Coordinator, Roy Williams say viewers could see 50 or more meteors an hour during peak times.

He says the Perseids appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus and are a result of debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet.
