Herkimer, NY (WIBX) - Over the past year, five local school cafeterias have received grant funding to improve healthy foods served in the lunch line.

Herkimer County HealthNet awarded the funds to the Poland, West Canada Valley, Ilion, Little Falls and Mount Markham school districts.

The money went to improve "fresh express" lines, sandwich and salad stations, fruit smoothies, a school garden and more access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

The funding helps the cafeterias greatly as Herkimer County School cafeterias operate separately from the school districts and receive no money from the districts.

Herkimer County HealthNet says all schools helped with the  grant funding have reported students like the food improvements.
