Canastota, NY (WIBX) - May is bicycle safety month. To celebrate, the Madison County Sheriff's Office and Safe Kids Upstate NY are teaming up to provide children with free helmets.

On May 10th, from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. at ZEMS Ice Cream in Canastota, any kid accompanied by a parent will receive a helmet while supplies last. Those attending will also learn the importance of bicycle safety.

In addition, Operation Safe Child ID cards will be available for children, along with a visit from McGruff.

According to state law, bicyclists 14 years and younger must wear a helmet. Other counties, including Erie and Rockland, require everyone to wear a helmet.
