Pennsylvania State Police say there was quite a mess to clean recently up when 1,600 gallons of a chemical used in a number of applications ranging from an ingredient in cement and fertilizer to animal feed supplements and skin ointments spilled from a tipped-over freightliner truck.

Officials say approximately 3,100 gallons of Magnesium Chloride shifted in the cargo tank of the truck as it was rounding a curve on Wyalusing New Albany Road and the driver swerved to avoid a head-on crash with an on-coming vehicle.

The truck hit a mail box, swerved back into the west bound and east bound lanes before 57 year old Keith Hotzman of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania totally lost control.  The truck hit a road sign and embankment before overturning onto the passenger side.

The chemical dumped out of the tank into the ditch and across both lanes of Wyalusing New Albany Road.

The road was closed for about six hours.

Hotzman was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
