Michael Sam is officially a member of the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.

The former SEC co-defensive player of the year signed a deal with Dallas today after being cut by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend.

Despite recording 11 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks in the preseason, the Rams defense is just too deep to keep the seventh round draft pick on the team.

The Cowboys will keep Sam on the practice squad with hopes that the 4-3 defensive end can provide some depth for Dallas' depleted defense should the situation arise.

Sam became the first openly gay player in NFL history after being drafted by the Rams in the seventh round of this year's NFL Draft.
