A Utica native is competing in Martha Stewart's American Made competition.

Michelle Roberts, from Utica but now living in Rochester, nominated herself for the competition and has a chance at $10,000.

He product is a hand crafted clay Messenger Bird.

In the belly of the bird is a small hole where you can write a little note, roll it up and put it in the bird's belly.

''With today's technology, it's some important to send somebody a nice unique gift to show somebody who you feel, and you can actually tell them how you feel,'' with your message, Roberts said.

Roberts said she hopes to have the birds - which sell for $20 - manufactured on a larger scale, and be able to donate a percentage of each bird's sale to some cause.
