New Hartford Police Chief Michael Inserra says Facebook and other social media outlets are helping police solve crimes and connect with the community.

He says Utica Police have cooperated with his department, sharing information that has led to arrests and increased surveillance.  In a written statement the department made specific mention of a case where a photo of a shoplifting photo was posted and, within thirty minutes the suspect was identified.

Inserra credits Utica Police Sergeant Steven Hauck with providing his office with help getting the page up and running.  Both departments are hopeful that the increased use of social media will help prevent crimes as well as solve them.
