Nuisance Grows at Abandoned Binghamton Store

An empty building on Binghamton's North Side continues to pose challenges for police and those who live and work nearby.

Weeds are growing on the lot at 435 State Street around the structure last occupied by a Big Lots store.

Those who work near the property say they are anxiously awaiting the planned demolition of the building.

In recent weeks, weeds around the building have been growing. The property is littered with trash, including broken glass and empty liquor bottles.

Police officers have been working to try to keep homeless people from trespassing at the site.

Beer and soda containers fill an area near a former entrance to the building where vandals have removed barriers.

Various projects have been discussed for the site but no no progress has been reported.

The city has received state funding for the planned demolition of the abandoned retail building this summer. It's not known when that work will get underway.
