SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — About 450 residents of a troubled nursing home in Syracuse could get an average of $640 each under the terms of a pending class action lawsuit settlement.

The Onondaga County Supreme Court has given preliminary approval to the settlement which orders Bishop Rehabilitation and Nursing Center to pay $495,000. Syracuse.com reports $300,000 will go to residents if approved, and the size of payments will be based on how long people lived there.

The settlement will go for final approval following a hearing later this year.

The lawsuit alleges short staffing at the facility harmed residents. The new operator of the nursing home, Clinton Square Operations, agreed to settle and also agreed to improve staffing.
