ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is hosting a candle lighting ceremony near the state Capitol to highlight suicide awareness and prevention efforts.

During Thursday evening's event, dubbed "Lights of Hope," floating lights will be placed into the reflecting pool to raise awareness about suicide, its impact, and efforts to destigmatize mental illness and help struggling individuals.

The event is being organized by the state office of Mental Health and the Albany County executive's office. Local mental health advocates and family members who have lost a loved one to suicide are expected to attend.

The event begins at 6:15 p.m.
