NEW YORK (AP) — A 10-year-old boy is recovering after falling 20 feet down an open manhole in Brooklyn.

It happened Tuesday on 13th Avenue and 49th Street in Borough Park.

Two Verizon workers driving by came to the boy's aid. They lowered a collapsible ladder so he could climb out.

The Department of Environmental Protection says the manhole cover was missing. It says it had cracked and broken apart at some point. The agency is investigating to determine when and how it happened.

The boy had been on his way to school when he fell in.

He was taken to a hospital with bruises on his leg. He required some stitches.
