NYC Church Presents Syrian Refugee Art Installation

NEW YORK (AP) — A church in Lower Manhattan is presenting an art installation to help promote greater relief efforts and raise awareness about the Syrian refugee crisis.

"Another Day Lost" opened Sunday in the churchyard and parish center of Trinity Church Wall Street. It's made of waste material including medicine packaging and discarded books. It's housed under a tent that contains thousands of tiny cardboard tents surrounded by burnt matches. The matches represent the number of days since the start of the Syrian uprising. One match will be added for each day the conflict continues.

It's the work of Syrian-born, UK-based artist Issam Kourbaj, who was inspired by aerial views of refugee camps.

It invites visitors to participate in a social media campaign to urge governments to welcome refugees.

It ends January 5, 2015.
