SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — President Barack Obama is responding to unprecedented data breaches and cyberattacks by encouraging members of the private sector to share information with each other and with the federal government as a first line of defense.

Obama is headlining a White House summit on cybersecurity and consumer protection at Stanford University on Friday.

A top economic adviser to the president, Jeff Zients (zynts), says a goal of the summit is to drive home the message that strong cybersecurity can be good for businesses by providing them with a competitive edge. Zients says all industries and types of businesses face cybersecurity risks.

Numerous companies, ranging from mass retailers Target and Home Depot to Sony Pictures Entertainment to health insurer Anthem, recently suffered costly and embarrassing data breaches.
