Washington, DC (WIBX) - President Obama has announced stricter background checks and an assault weapons ban to help stem gun violence.

He's also proposing a ban on large capacity magazines to help reduce gun violence.

It would limit the capacity to ten rounds.

The president also called on Congress to restore a ban on military-style assault weapons.

Obama made the announcement at a White House event attended by children who wrote letters to the president about school safety.

The President called gun violence an epidemic in the U.S.  Vice President Joe Biden, who chaired a White House task force on gun safety, opened the event and called the Newtown tragedy "senseless."
