Officials Weigh Proposal to Level 1920s Westchester Pool

RYE, N.Y. (AP) — Westchester County officials are weighing a proposal to level the public pool at Playland Park.

The proposal by County Executive Rob Astorino to fill in the 88-year-old pool in Rye for $2.6 million would avoid a potentially costly plan to fix it. Officials say 20,000 to 27,000 visits per season might not be enough to justify spending an estimated $8 million to fix the pool.

Westchester County spokesman Ned McCormick says there's an idea that the spot would be an ideal place for restaurants and a catering facility because it has a great view.

Diedre Curran of Friends of Playland told WCBS-TV that officials don't want a public pool because they want to make a profit.

The county legislature will decide within weeks what to do with the pool.
