Oneida Nation Officers Earn Federal Certifications
Canastota, NY (WIBX) - Sixteen Oneida Nation police officers have earned special federal certifications from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The officers, along with 6 others from the Saint Regis Mohawk Police, participated in a three-day training program at the Oneida Nation Police Department in Canastota.
As part of the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010, the "Criminal Jurisdiction in Indian Country" program allows tribal and local law enforcement to work together in investigating federal crimes in Indian country. It also allows tribal police departments and courts more authority when enforcing laws and prosecuting.
In total, 34 Oneida Nation officers and 15 Saint Regis Mohawk police officers are certified by the BIA and may refer cases to the U.S. Attorney's Office for prosecution.
