Possible heavy rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Florence has led to the New York State Canal Corporation to close a section of the Erie Canal.

40 miles of the Canal will be closed from Lock E-8 in Scotia to Lock E-15 in Fort Plain.

The Canal Corp says it must open the upper gates in that section to prevent flooding.

Officials say that could cause hazardous water level fluctuations of up to four feet.

The temporary closure could last up to several days.
