Rome Man Arrested After Fraud Scheme Fails

Rome, NY (WIBX) - State Police say a Rome man is under arrest after allegedly bilking several people out of their money.

Timothy Smith, 40, is charged with one misdemeanor count of Scheme to Defraud, after police say he tried to get money from homeowners.

Smith would claim his girlfriend or wife was locked out of her vehicle and needed money to pay for a locksmith. On several occasions he received money.

Anyone in Marcy, Rome or Floyd who may have been approached by Smith during August or September is urged to contact State Police at (315) 736-8802.
