BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — After scouring woods around the Pennsylvania State Police barracks where a trooper was gunned down and another critically injured, authorities suspect the shooter or shooters has left the area.

State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan says the attack Friday night was directed at state police. He says, "It has touched us to the core that such a thing could happen."

The troopers were ambushed at the barracks in Blooming Grove in the Poconos in northeastern Pennsylvania. Cpl. Bryon Dickson of Dunmore was killed. Trooper Alex Douglass was injured. He later underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition.

Dickson, a seven-year veteran, had transferred to the region from the Philadelphia barracks several months ago. He was married with two young sons.

The search for their assailant continues.
