The YWCA Mohawk Valley will be getting $30,000 in state funding for its New Horizons program.

The program was had its funding abruptly cut in August, and now thanks to the grant secured by Senator Joe Griffo, the YWCA will be able to re-open the program in a new location.

“Domestic violence is one of the most prevalent problems in our society, yet it often exists in the shadows where victims of physical, sexual and mental abuse may feel too frightened and manipulated to seek safety on their own," Senator Griffo said. "YWCA Mohawk Valley has been one of the strongest advocates for these victims and their families, and their New Horizon program has served to provide hope for so many women who may feel like there is no way out. For those who are seeking freedom from abuse, I am proud to provide this funding so the New Horizons program can continue to assist these young women as they begin a new life of independence.”

The YWCA Mohawk Valley's New Horizons program helps young women in the area find transitional housing after suffering domestic violence or sexual assault.

“We are extremely grateful to Senator Griffo for securing this funding," said YWCA Mohawk Valley Executive Director/CEO Dianne Stancato. "This allows us to restart our critical program which serves to address the root problems of youth homelessness in our community. There is no other program that helps to provide a second chance to young women living on the streets as a result of domestic violence, sexual violence, or human trafficking. Despite all of the obstacles we’ve faced recently, YWCA Mohawk Valley did not waiver for one moment in its decision to continue New Horizons. It is vital to our community, and we thank the Senator for his recognition of its importance his continued support.”
