Oneida, NY (WIBX) - A cashier in Oneida is breathing a sigh of relieve, after a traumatic run-in with a would-be robber over the weekend. According to Oneida Police, 27-year-old Shawn P. Kinsella of Wilbur Street in Oneida, attacked the clerk at the Glenwood Plaza Liquor Mart. Kinsella is accused of grabbing the woman by her throat upon entering the store, holding a steak knife to her neck and demanded money from the cash register.

Police say Kinsella's grip around the woman's neck loosened when she backed away with help from the counter between them. They say Kinsella ran out of the store without any money, after throwing the knife and a bottle of liquor at the clerk. He later turned himself in to police after calling the 911 Center.

Kinsella was committed to Madison County Jail on multiple felony charges, with cash bail set at $5,000. His bond is set at $10,000.  Police say the clerk sustained minor injuries--a large scrape on the side of her neck--during the scuffle. The incident occurred on 5/12/12 around 4:00 p.m. The suspect is due back in Madison County Court on 5/18/12.

Kinsella is facing the following charges:

  • Attempted Robbery 1st Degree - Class C Felony
  • Assault 2nd Degree - Class D Felony
  • Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation
  • Harassment 2nd Degree
