The Herkimer County Health Department has confirmed a third case of rabies this year.

A raccoon found in the Village of Newport was taken to the Wadsworth Laboratory, where it tested positive for the virus.

So far this year, all three confirmed animals have been raccoons, with the last positive test received on February 5th.

A series of rabies clinics will soon be held throughout Herkimer County, starting March 14th at the East Herkimer Fire Department. Oneida County is also scheduling its first rabies clinic this year at the Sherrill Community Arts Center on March 9th.

In the meantime, officials say all wild animals should be considered potentially rabid and to never approach a wild animal that is acting oddly. All animals should also be kept up to date on their vaccinations, in order to prevent a possible spread to people.
