LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Police say the death toll from a train accident in northern India has risen to 40.

Senior police officer Amrendra Sainger says at least 100 others were injured when the Gorakhpur Express passenger train plowed into a freight train sitting on the tracks near a railway station in Uttar Pradesh state.

Authorities were searching for the station master, who disappeared after the accident Monday in Sant Kabir Nagar, about 220 kilometers (140 miles) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow.
