Utica, NY (WIBX) - The Utica City School District is in line to get its first Charter School for grades 6 to 12. That's according to a Syracuse based group responsible for leading the efforts. The application to begin the process will be filed with the New York State Education Department tomorrow, (1/17/12). Organizers say the aim is to open the Charter School in August 2013, and offer tuition free enrollment to area students.

If given the green light, and when the necessary funding is secured, the school will focus on STEM curriculum, as well as, offer a broad variety of extracurricular activities that will emphasize the importance of community building and social engagement. A public information session will be held at the Utica Public Library on Thursday, January 26th, at 7:00 p.m. More information is available at, www.uascs.org.
