The Utica and New Hartford Police Department's SWAT Team has been certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams says the department's application met all the requirements established by the DCJS's Municipal Training Council.

There are over 100 SWAT Teams in New York State and only nine have achieved certification.

IIn addition to earning its SWAT team certification, the Utica Police Department is one of only 22 percent of police agencies in New York State to have accreditation status with the DCJS.

The UPD's Metro SWAT unit is made up 21 officers from the Utica and New Hartford Police Departments.
