Since opening in 1999, Roma Sausage and Deli's tomato pie has become a staple food for Central New Yorkers.

Sure we know that, but now the rest of the 'foodie' world does too.

In an article for Saveur magazine, blogger Hawk Krall happened upon Roma's while searching for unique foods.

In his article he talks about how he knew what tomato pie was before coming to Utica, because it was also known in his home state of Pennsylvania.

He says he was "shocked" when he got older and found out that it is "virtually unknown across the country, save for a few scattered regions like Central New York and parts of New England."

"After a lifetime of eating it, I can honestly say that Roma's, an out-of-the-way sausage shop on an industrial strip of Utica, New York, is the best I’ve ever had," Krall wrote.

There's even a nod to O'scugnizzo in the article where Krall talks about the history of tomato pie in the Utica area.

Krall goes on to talk about the different types of tomato pie he has encountered in his travels, but he always refers back to Utica's as the best.
