On Monday, communities throughout the area paid homage by remembering those lost while fighting for our freedom.

In Whitesboro, a Memorial Day parade marched along Main Street before giving way to a flag presentation and 21 gun salute at the Village Green.

Members of the Whitesboro Fire Department lined up along the memorial path as they watched the flag go by. It was then quickly raised to the top before being lowered to half-staff.

A rendition of Taps was played following the flag raising, along with the Ringing of the Bell for fallen firefighters.

Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day and was originally intended to honor Civil War soldiers. It was later extended to honor all military service members who have died.
