A crash that immediately claimed the lives of two people is under investigation in Herkimer County.

At approximately 3:30pm yesterday, July 9, 2015, New York State Police were called to the scene of a two-car crash on Newport Road.

According to a written release, 24-year-old Alexander Perry from Cold Brook, New York was headed north on the road in Schuyler when he allegedly failed to keep right and entered the southbound lane of traffic.

Perry's 1997 Toyota Camry then hit a 2003 Saturn head-on.

The driver of the Saturn has been identified as 21-year-old Cameron Jones from White Creek Road in Newport.  Jones was brought to St. Elizabeth Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Perry broke both of his legs in the crash and is being treated at a local hospital.

There were five passengers in Jones' car, including a seven-month-old fetus being carried by 18-year-old Emily Edwards of Little Falls.  Edwards was in the front seat of the car. Edwards lost the baby and is being treated, according to the release, "for blunt force injuries."

All of the adults were extricated from their respective cars by the Schuyler Fire Department and the Newport Fire Department.

18-Year-old Theresa Cotton of Middleville, New York was in the back seat.  She suffered a broken skull and was last listed in critical condition at Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse.

There were also two children in the car.  Both of them, identified as two-year-old Aubrey Stafford and four-month-old Ellaweis Cotton, were both properly secured in child safety seats.  Their injuries are believed to be minor.  They were hospitalized for evaluation.
